easy wood projects
Some months ago over a pint of ale at the local bar of choice for the woodwork fraternity. John Shaw and I were approached with an offer from a local Nelsonian. A mutually beneficial exercise involving a Yew Tree. The offer, you remove the large Yew Tree which is slowly but surely intruding on our house and you can have the wood. Now the success of this kind of situation for the woodworker depends entirely on the quality of wood in question. Luckily for us English Yew (Taxus baccata) happens to be a highly prized timber for furniture makers, turners and bowyers(long-bow makers). And it just so happens we know a young local woodworker Louis who is trying his hand at this traditional craft.
So with a plan for the timber once removed it was time to get cracking and tackle the tree. With the help of a couple of old stihl chainsaws we got stuck in and removed the tree as carefully as possible and always with the intention of maximizing the amount of quality timber we could gain from the tree, i.e cutting as long a lengths as possible.
While the tree is far from perfect specimen for milling there will be some very nice timber to come from the gnarly branches and intertwined limbs. Below are some photos of one of the limbs which was small enough to mill on our school bandsaw.
Full-time students Bryan and Ian making the first cut. There are two boards screwed to the side of the limb to support the log and help achieve a straight true cut. |
An exciting moment. Whilst this limb has some defects it gives us our first indication of the fantastic colour and pattern inside present in this tree. |

The limb once cut into flitches was stacked outside to season. |
