easy wood projects
After venturing to the local timber yard in search of Elm, so called experts Lachie and Thorkild retuned with some treasure even if a little unintended. Not Elm but New Zealand grown air dried ash, and it bends as well.
Cut from somewhere in The South Island of New Zealand, the timber which we think is European Ash (fraxinus excelsior) has quite an array of colours varying from olive heart to pinks and creams and many of the boards have brilliant fiddleback figure.
Two Chairs by tutor Thorkild Hansen and Beginning Cabinet Making 3 student Jan. The crest rail on the chair closest to screen is made from the European Ash. |
Three dovetail boxes, The Ash responded wonderfully to the plane and chisel. |
