Grand Day Out

by Jeff Gillham

Part of the steam bending module involved a visit to the tutor, David Haigs home and workshop. The task to be accomplished was thicknessing the laminations for the stools we were making, using the big SMC belt sander:
Its a horrible noisy machine, and if you open it up theres lots of wires and circuit type things inside it that only an electronic engineer can make any sense of, but boy, does it do a good job. Having dispensed with the required task pretty quickly it was on to play with and admire the 1896 bandsaw that David had in the same workshop:

First Reece and Jeff colluded to turn the machine on without the blade tensioned etc. This got Dave hurtling haplessly and helplessly across the room yelling desperately to turn the machine off etc. Luckily no damage was done. Then Dave showed us how to really do extreme woodworking, operating the machine as it was intended to be used in 1896-completely unguarded:
Notice the complete look of calm on the face of a man in extreme danger. Kids: please dont try this at home!
