easy wood projects - Woodworking in America Conference

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

The folks at Woodworking Magazine and Popular Woodworking have announced a new event coming up in November. The Woodworking in America Conference will be held November 14-16 in Berea, Kentucky. The list of stellar demonstrators includes Roy Underhill (of PBSs "The Woodwrights Shop" fame), Frank Klausz, Thomas Lie-Nielsen and Ron Hock, just to name a few. I’m really excited that this event is going to be held fairly close to me. And I’m also excited to be able to attend. While I’m there, I’ll be blogging as much as I can to describe what’s going on for those who are unable to attend.

From the announcement:

“There will be more than 40 classes during the three-day event, and 10 of them will be hands-on workshops in the Berea College student industries building. We’ll cover a range of hand-tool topics, from basic sharpening to advanced dovetailing. Plus, many of the sessions will focus on aspects of the craft that rarely get attention, including Japanese tools, 18th-century woodworking and chairmaking.”

If you are in the area or if you can get to the area, this promises to be a truly unique opportunity to learn up-close from some of the best craftsmen working today. The official website for the event is www.woodworkinginamerica.com. You’ll find information there about registration, fees and logistics. I hope to see you in Berea!

easy wood projects - Be Eco Lazy For Earth Day

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

In honor of Earth Day, Im recycling (!) an old post about a concept I call "eco-laziness":

As I was mowing my yard yesterday in the hot sun, a new concept dawned on me, one that, if it were practiced on a large scale, could have a positive impact on the environment and, perhaps more immediately, save me some work. You see, dear reader, I’m lazy. La-Z. Lazy with a capital Z. Here’s what I started to ponder as the sweat started dripping: Why do we people who have yards have to mow them every week? Is it because the neighbors do? Is it because our aesthetic sense dictates that a mown lawn is the ideal?

The answer is probably ‘yes’ to both. Well, I want to propose a new way. The way I see it, there are at least two things that are harmful about our national addiction to a mown lawn: 1) it necessitates the use of gasoline, which is something we need to stop wasting and which releases bad stuff into the air and 2) it necessitates me exerting myself. Let’s say, conservatively, that one million people mow their lawn every week. Let’s also say that each uses a half-gallon of gas. The easy math says that if they went from mowing every week to mowing every two weeks, that would save 500,000 gallons of gas every two weeks! That’s exponentially huge when you consider the $2 million bucks it would save, not to mention preventing the environmental harm of drilling, refining and transporting the gas. (Obviously, I could save even more gasoline by mowing the yard with the push mower that is gathering spider webs in my shed, but if you think I will do that, you are missing the point entirely.)

Here’s another example. Aside from mowing the lawn every other week instead of every week, I practice eco-laziness when I drink milk straight from the container (thus avoiding having to waste water – and expend energy -- by washing a glass). So the definition of eco-laziness is: To not do something that harms the environment mostly to avoid doing work. An environmental two-fer, if you will.

Who’s with me?!?

easy wood projects - Zhang Zhoujie Stainless Steel Furniture

easy wood projects

Just when I think I’ve seen everything in furniture, something like this comes up. The designer, Zhang Zhoujie, makes furniture out of stainless steel (and Titanium) but it looks like cut diamonds. This chair is officially the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It looks like a CAD drawing come to life. It looks like it was designed by the Terminator.
Although this furniture isn’t wood, it has a kind of organic nature to it. To achieve these shapes and contours, he uses randomness in the form of artificial intelligence. Read about his design philosophy and methods here. At 28, he was recently named Young Designer of the Year at the Elle Decor International Design Awards. Check out the video to see how he works:

easy wood projects - Furniture I Love Timothy Coleman Edition

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

Im happy to feature the work of a fellow English major, Timothy Coleman. Timothy got his training at the College of the Redwoods and that is obvious in the level of craftsmanship in his furniture. I see it in the faired curves, the proportions and the precisely fitted, coopered doors. But beyond that, he has his own particular style.

He gets all the big stuff right, but then adds so much to each piece by supplying incredible details. Im fascinated by the way he adds patterns to his work. Be sure to check out the publications section on his website, where he has teasers of articles hes written for Fine Woodworking explaining his technique. You can find the full articles online if you have a subscription to Finewoodworking.com.

Try to imagine these pieces without the patterns to see if they stand up without them. While its impossible to do, its still a good exercise. Im sure the pieces would still be amazing, but the patterns actually make you appreciate the structure of each piece that much more by leading your eye around the perimeter or the interior, depending on where he places the patterns. The patterns make you look at these pieces in a fresh way.

Im particularly impressed at how he uses woods like yew and English sycamore to add subtle contrasts. I tend to resort to the knock-you-over-the-head, dark-vs.-light contrast in my own work, so its helpful to see how subtle grades of darkness and lightness can make a piece of furniture richer and more balanced.

Timothy has a great website, so be sure to check out all the sections. You can see more of his work at www.timothycoleman.com.

easy wood projects - Furniture I Love Clark Kellogg Edition

easy wood projects

Im really impressed by Clark Kelloggs work. I first saw an example of it featured in Fine Woodworking’s “Furniture: 102 Contemporary Designs” Special Issue, 2008. Called "10 Small Boxes Huddled Together for Warmth," this wall-mounted piece is an exercise in proportion. If I had conceived a project like this, I probably would have stopped with simply putting all the boxes together or making it complicated by integrating the boxes somehow. Its much more interesting that the boxes are separated slightly or at least have the illusion of being separated by recessed, ebonized spacers. To go another step in showing attention to detail, Kellogg framed out the holes that serve as door and drawer pulls. This is one of those pieces that shows incredible design talent combined with excellent craftsmanship.

Though Kellogg makes the full range of seating, tables and casegoods, I want to feature another box. This one was commissioned to store CDs and has an ingenious recessed tray to hold an iPod. The box also allows the iPod to be charged. This piece, though small in size, involves the full range of woodworking skills and is executed flawlessly. See how he cut the dovetails by hand here.

With training from both the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and the College of the Redwoods in California, Kellogg has skills beyond his years. His Double-Trestle Desk is one of the best interpretations of the Arts & Crafts style Ive seen in a long time.

I encourage furniture makers and furniture appreciators both to explore Clarks website, as it shows more of his beautiful work and includes his thoughts on design and construction. Check it out at www.kelloggfurniture.com.

easy wood projects - Furniture I Love Susan Link Edition

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

I found out about Susan Links work in an ad for the Focus on Furniture show at Handmade in America. The show is up until August 14 in the furniture mecca of Asheville, North Carolina.

You can get an idea of the range of Susans work by looking at her two treatments of the buffet. The Craftsman Buffet (above) is light and dynamic and has an uncluttered design featuring a floating top. The Fired up Buffet (below) is similar in design and function, but much more dramatic with its use of ambient lighting.

I also want to point out her walnut/curly maple end table. Its a straightforward table done very well and shows some great choices in contrasting woods.

On the imaginative side of the spectrum is the wall shelf she calls Morning Jazz. Its completely functional in that it contains a mirror, drawers for small items like keys or jewelry and the shelf. But it also shows her creativity and humor. Im sure working with all those complex angles was no small feat.

easy wood projects - Orgy of Sanding

Orgy of Sanding

 by Jeff Gillham

Everyone knows that fine woodworkers dont sand. Of if they do they should do it quietly, in a corner where no one can see, nervously skuffing a piece of 400 grit (absolute minimum) against the silky fibres of their finely planed work. Certainly sanding shouldnt be done in public-and definitely not in front of a camera. But Graeme Henry was prepared to go where no man (or woman) from the centre had gone before-shamelessly sanding in full view of everyone, even despite the protestations of John Shaw, who was desperately trying to media manage this embarrasing event. Towards the end of the clip you will even see Graeme doing the "Henry Backhand Manoeuvre"-surely a skill that can only be aquired after years of gratuitous sanding!

woodworking table - The MoMA Table

woodworking table

woodworking table

Several years ago on a trip back to New York, I visited the Museum of Modern Art to check out their Architecture and Design Galleries. They have a pretty amazing collection of twentieth century design, complete with all kinds of consumer products and some great furniture such as chairs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gio Ponti and Gustav Stickley. There was even a molded plywood leg splint designed by Charles and Ray Eames for battlefield use during World War II when certain kinds of metal and other materials were rationed. But the piece that blew me away was this little side table by Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, a designer/architect I had never heard of from the early Arts and Crafts movement in England. (I havent received permission to use MoMAs photo yet, so in the meantime my grainy, dark cell phone photo will have to suffice.)

Made in 1901, the table I call the MoMA Table is quite small, only about 27 inches high and 20 inches in diameter. It was made from quarter-sawn white oak that was fumed and has a round top and three legs joined by three angled stretchers. Another interesting feature is that the legs are hexagonal, tapered and splayed.

When I approached the table for the first time, walking around it, the angles of the stretchers made it seem like there was a fire underneath it. (Check out the movie below that I took with my cell phone.) I had never thought about designing something so that it moves as you change your perspective. I’m not sure if that was Baillie Scott’s intention, but he nailed it if it was. The other thing that struck me was that for an Arts and Crafts piece, this table is surprisingly delicate and elegant. Most of the furniture from that era tends to be heavy and strong to suggest that it is connected to the earth. Other Baillie Scott pieces I’ve seen, like these at the Art Institute of Chicago, strike me as dated, bulky and showy while his side table seems timeless.

As soon as I saw the table, I knew that I had to make one someday. I’ve looked around everywhere and can’t find an example of anyone ever reproducing it. Even though it is small, the table presents some serious engineering challenges. First, as I said above, the legs are hexagonal, tapered and splayed. Square legs that have one or two tapers are challenging enough. Square legs that have four tapers are even more challenging. But hexagonal tapers are off the charts. To make them consistently and precisely, I will have to design a jig to use on the table saw. I’ll write more about it later, but I’m envisioning something that would allow me to set the taper then turn the legs on an axis at a precise angle to cut the facets of the hexagon. The facets have to be the same width because the stretchers connect to them. The stretchers are the next challenge because they are joined with a compound angle. I’m not sure how I would make the tenons at the ends of the stretchers yet. I’m open to using floating tenons if that makes it any easier. Or if that doesn’t work, I might have to use magic.

It’s a bit of a risk to talk about something I’m going to make because I’m not sure how quickly I’ll be able to get to it. And I’m not sure I’ll succeed. But if I do, I’ll have a very cool table that I’ll be able to make multiples of and maybe even sell. I’ll have a very cool jig that will theoretically be able to make tapered legs with different numbers of sides. Also, I’ll be able to make cool, faceted legs for other tables and stools. I guess the main reason I’m interested in attempting this table is that I’ll learn a lot along the way – even if I’m not able to pull it off. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

easy wood projects - Stairs by Tiernan Roe Fine Woodworking

easy wood projects

easy wood projects

Its been awhile since I updated but unlike before where I was too busy working to post anything, Im now spending as much of my free time as possible out sailing. The weather has been especially good lately and when I can see the sea from my workshop its very hard to resist the temptation to knock off early and go sailing.
Enough excuses and Ill give you a run down of the stairs illustrated below. The strings are made from 9" by 2" Ash and each step was cut out and the "waste" piece was glued and screwed to the step below to extend the string to an effective width of 12". The treads are 10" by 2" Honduras Pitch Pine to match the flooring.

The handrail is Ash again and came from a site clearance. The bark was stripped off with a drawknife and the hand rail was then mortised into the newel posts. I used 10mm stainless steel bar for the spindles to make the appearance as light as possible and still maintain strength. The spindles had to be individually plumbed up from the tread to the bottom of the hand rail so they wouldnt look crooked, which was a very time consuming operation. Next time Ill use a laser plumb bob.
